To test, prove, examine — as a metallurgist tests gold in fire to see if it is genuine. Not suspicious rejection, but honest, fire-tested approval.

BIBLICAL EXAMPLE

The church at Ephesus was commended by Jesus because they "tested those who claim to be apostles and are not, and found them false" (). They loved the truth enough to test what came near it.

EXPOSITION

John commands believers not to believe every spirit, but to test them. In an age of infinite content and endless prophetic voices, this is not paranoia — it is protection. Dokimazō is the same word used for refining precious metal. The refiner does not hate the ore; he honors it enough to purify it. Test the spirits by asking: Does this align with the Word? Does it exalt Jesus as Lord? Does it produce the fruit of the Spirit? Does it lead to holiness or license? The gift of discernment is not given so we can label everyone; it is given so we can steward what is truly of God and refuse what is not. Fire-tested faith is the only faith that stands.

REFLECTION

What voices have you allowed close to your heart without testing them by Scripture? What have you accepted simply because it was popular, polished, or prophetic-sounding?

PRAYER

Father, teach me to test every spirit by Your Word. I do not want to be gullible or cynical. Give me the fire of Your Spirit to purify what I receive and reject what is counterfeit. In Jesus' name, amen.

CONFESSION

"I test every spirit by the Word of God. I am neither naive nor suspicious. I discern truth with love and refuse deception with courage."

PROPHETIC APPLICATION

Audit your inputs. Look at the last five voices you consumed (sermons, podcasts, feeds, prophecies). Ask three questions of each: Does it exalt Jesus? Does it align with the Word? Does it produce holiness? Prune what fails.
