DISCERNMENT AS THE FRUIT OF ABOUNDING LOVE

BIBLICAL EXAMPLE

Mary of Bethany discerned the hour of Jesus' burial and poured out costly perfume while others called it waste (). Her love produced perception the crowd did not have.

EXPOSITION

Paul prays that the Philippians' love would abound more and more in knowledge and all discernment, so they could approve what is excellent. Notice the order: love produces discernment, discernment produces excellence. Many people think love makes you blind; biblical love makes you see. When you truly love God and love people, your spiritual eyes sharpen. You stop settling for the good because you can now perceive the best. Aisthēsis is moral perception — the ability to smell what is right before you can explain it. This is why the deepest lovers of Jesus are often the sharpest discerners of His will. They are not paranoid; they are perceptive. Love is not the enemy of discernment; love is the school of discernment.

REFLECTION

Where have you settled for good when God was offering excellent? Has your love for Jesus grown cold enough that your discernment has dulled?

PRAYER

Lord Jesus, cause my love for You to abound more and more. Sharpen my perception through affection. Let me approve what is excellent because I have tasted what is true. Amen.

CONFESSION

"My love for Jesus abounds. My discernment sharpens as my affection deepens. I approve what is excellent and refuse what is merely acceptable."

PROPHETIC APPLICATION

Identify one area where you have been choosing "good" over "best" — a relationship, a use of time, a habit. Bring it before the Lord in worship, and ask Him to realign you with the excellent.
