— "to another discerning (diakriseis) of spirits." Diakrisis means a thorough separating, a judging between. It is plural in the text: discernings, ongoing acts of distinguishing. BIBLICAL EXAMPLE

Paul at Philippi () — A slave girl follows the apostles crying, "These men are the servants of the most high God, which shew unto us the way of salvation." The statement was factually true. The source was not the Holy Spirit. Paul, grieved, addressed the spirit rather than debating the sentence.

EXPOSITION

is the passage that dismantles our simplest test. The girl at Philippi said something completely accurate. She identified Paul and Silas correctly, named the most high God correctly, and described their message correctly. And Paul, "being grieved," turned and addressed the spirit behind her words. Learn this carefully: discernment is not merely deciding whether a statement sounds accurate. It is discerning what spirit is producing the activity and what fruit that activity is designed to create. Truth can be spoken by a wrong source for a wrong purpose. That is why the gift is called discerning of spirits, not discerning of statements. Believers must learn to distinguish among several sources of spiritual and religious activity: the Holy Spirit; the human spirit, which is real and can express deeply sincere things that are not divine; emotion, which is God-given but not authoritative; imagination, which is constantly active; learned religious behavior, which can reproduce forms without life; cultural influence, which shapes what we expect a move of God to look like; and genuine deceptive spiritual activity, which Scripture treats soberly and never sensationally. Do not let this lesson make you fearful or suspicious. A suspicious church wounds its own members and calls it discernment. Sober maturity is the goal — the capacity to remain warm, open, and unafraid while quietly evaluating. What should be examined? Agreement with Scripture, rightly interpreted. The lordship of Jesus — makes confession of Christ a foundational test. The character of Christ reflected in the manner, not only the message. Spiritual fruit, over time. Motive, both the speaker's and your own. Order, because God is not the author of confusion. Edification, because the Spirit builds. Humility, because pride does not come from God. Truth, plainly. And the long-term effect of the manifestation on people's walk with Jesus, their love for Scripture, and their stability. That last test is the one impatient people skip. Time is a discerner. What is of God endures examination and produces fruit that remains. What is not eventually reveals itself in the wreckage it leaves in people's lives. Notice also Paul's restraint. He did not launch an investigation, gather a crowd, or publicize a demonic diagnosis. He waited many days, and then, grieved rather than excited, he acted with authority in the name of Jesus Christ. Discernment that is excited about what it detects is not yet mature. Formation happens here: spiritual maturity does not merely recognize that something is happening; it discerns what is producing it.

REFLECTION

What evidence should be examined before declaring that something came from God?

PRAYER

Lord, give me discernment that is sober, loving, fearless, and governed by Christ. Deliver me from suspicion that wounds people and from naivety that endangers them. Teach me to look past the surface of a statement to the source behind it, and to weigh fruit over time rather than reacting to atmosphere. Let Jesus be Lord over everything I accept and everything I reject. Keep my heart warm and my judgment clear. In Jesus' name, amen.

PROPHETIC APPLICATION

Spiritual maturity does not merely recognize that something is happening; it discerns what is producing it. Test the source, examine the fruit, and give time its work before you declare a thing to be of God.

SPIRITUAL EXERCISE — Evaluate one spiritual experience by Scripture, fruit, motive, order, humility, and whether it exalts Jesus. Write your findings honestly, including anything you are unsure about. REFLECTION QUESTIONS 1. Do you lean toward suspicion or toward naivety, and what has that cost you? 2. What long-term fruit has followed the spiritual experiences you have accepted as from God? 3. How would you respond if something accurate came from a source that was not the Holy Spirit?
