BIBLICAL EXAMPLE

Agabus and the Antioch church () — A genuine predictive word, tested by the church, and immediately translated into practical love: every man according to his ability determined to send relief. Prophecy served people; it did not merely impress them.

EXPOSITION

Ask most believers to define prophecy and they will say prediction. Scripture says something larger. Paul writes, "Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy... he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort." The first stated purposes are building up, calling alongside, and comforting. Prediction appears in Scripture — Agabus foretold a famine and later Paul's binding — but prediction is one expression, not the definition. Prophetic utterance may edify, exhort, comfort, warn, prepare, confirm, reveal what God is emphasizing in a season, call people into alignment, strengthen faith, and bring clarity. A word that leaves a discouraged saint able to stand has done exactly what describes. Now draw distinctions that spare people much confusion. Prophetic sensitivity is a heightened awareness of what the Spirit is emphasizing. A prophetic impression is something perceived that has not yet been tested or articulated. A prophetic utterance is that impression spoken. The gift of prophecy is the Spirit-given capacity to speak such words as He wills. Prophetic function describes a believer who regularly operates in that gift. The office or ministry of a prophet is a governmental placement in the body of Christ (), recognized by leadership, proven over time, and carrying accountability. A believer may genuinely prophesy without occupying the office of a prophet. Confusing the two has ordained novices and wounded churches. Prophecy must be judged. "Let the prophets speak two or three, and let the other judge." Judging is not unbelief; it is the biblical companion of the gift. Paul places prophecy and evaluation in the same paragraph and adds that "the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets" — meaning no one may claim they could not help themselves. Self-control is evidence of the Holy Spirit, not its absence. Set clear boundaries. New Testament prophecy is not to be used to control people, to replace or override Scripture, to force marriages, to demand money, to create fear, or to make major life decisions for other people. A word from God confirms and clarifies; it does not seize the steering wheel of another person's obedience. When someone must obey a stranger's word rather than the Scriptures and the witness of the Spirit in their own life, manipulation has replaced ministry. adds the anchor: prophesy according to the proportion of faith. Speak what God gave, in the measure He gave it, and no further. Formation happens here. Prophecy is not spiritual performance; it is the responsible communication of what the Spirit desires to reveal, spoken by people who love the ones they are speaking to.

Father, purify how I understand and handle prophetic ministry. Deliver me from the desire to impress, from exaggeration, and from any use of Your name to pressure another person. Give me words that build up, that call alongside, that comfort, and that bring clarity. Teach me to speak only what You give, in the measure You give it. Let love govern my mouth, and let every word I carry lead people closer to Jesus and deeper into Your Word. In Jesus' name, amen.

Prophecy is not spiritual performance; it is the responsible communication of what the Spirit desires to reveal. Measure every word by whether it edified, exhorted, comforted, and pointed people to Christ.

SPIRITUAL EXERCISE — Ask the Holy Spirit to help you speak words that strengthen, encourage, and comfort without exaggeration or spiritual pressure. Then intentionally encourage three people this week with what you sense God is emphasizing about them, using honest language. REFLECTION QUESTIONS 1. Have you ever received a "prophetic word" that pressured you? How did you test it? 2. Do you know the difference between prophetic function and the office of a prophet in your own life? 3. What would change if edification, not accuracy about the future, were your measure of a word?
