PERCEIVING THE KINGDOM — PHASE THREE: THE LANGUAGE OF THE SPIRIT

KEY SCRIPTURE

STUDY NOTES & SCRIPTURE BREAKDOWN

GREEK WORD · STRONG'S G2058

lists "divers kinds of tongues" and "the interpretation (hermēneia) of tongues" as distinct gifts of the one Spirit. Hermēneia conveys the giving of sense and meaning rather than strict word-for-word translation (for which Greek has other terms). Supporting Scriptures: , that the church may receive edifying; 14:13, pray to interpret; 14:26-28, order in the assembly, with silence in the church if no interpreter is present.

GREEK WORD OF THE DAY

ἑρμηνεία

hermēneia

STRONG'S G2058

Interpretation; the rendering of meaning so that it can be understood — the root of our word hermeneutics.

BIBLICAL EXAMPLE

The Corinthian assembly () — A gathering overflowing with spiritual expression and starving for edification. Paul does not forbid the gifts; he orders them, so that all things may be done unto edifying and God may be seen as the author of peace, not confusion.

EXPOSITION

Few subjects have produced more confusion, and more unnecessary fear, than tongues and interpretation. Scripture is remarkably clear when we let it speak plainly. Begin with the distinctions. Personal prayer in tongues is the believer speaking to God, edifying himself, praying with the spirit when the understanding lacks words (, 4, 14-15). Paul honors this openly: "I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all." A public utterance in tongues is different — it is a manifestation given in the gathered assembly. The gift of interpretation is a separate gift by which the Spirit renders the meaning of that utterance so the body can understand. Interpretation exists for one purpose: edification. "Let all things be done unto edifying." Understand that interpretation is not necessarily a literal, word-for-word translation. The word itself, hermēneia, means the giving of meaning. This is why a brief utterance may carry a longer interpretation, or a longer utterance a concise one. The Spirit communicates the substance so the gathered body can receive it. This should relieve sincere believers who have wondered whether they were doing it wrong because the lengths did not match. Paul then gives order, and the order is not a punishment; it is love in practice. Let it be by two, or at the most three, and that by course; and let one interpret. And if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church, and let him speak to himself and to God. Notice that Paul does not tell the person to stop praying in tongues — he tells them to move it from the public assembly to private communion with God. Notice also 14:13: "let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret." Interpretation may be sought. Why does the gathered setting require this restraint? Because a public manifestation is not for the individual. If the body cannot understand, the body cannot be edified, and an unlearned visitor is left saying the church has lost its mind (14:23). Kingdom significance: the gifts belong to the body, and love governs their use. A gift used to draw attention to the vessel has been misused no matter how genuine the vessel. Let us also refuse three errors. Do not create fear around tongues — Paul says forbid not. Do not create competition around tongues — the Spirit divides to every man severally as He wills. And do not imply that public utterance without interpretation is spiritually superior; Paul says the opposite, that in the church he would rather speak five words with understanding than ten thousand in an unknown tongue. Formation happens here: love makes room for the Spirit and orders His manifestation so that everyone leaves built up.

REFLECTION

Why must public manifestations serve the gathered body rather than showcase the individual?

PRAYER

Father, thank You for the gifts of Your Spirit and for the love that governs them. Deliver me from fear of what You have given and from pride in what You have entrusted. Teach me the difference between communion with You in private and manifestation for the body in the gathering. Where I have desired to be seen, cleanse me. Give me a heart that longs for the whole body to be edified, and grant interpretation where You give utterance, that understanding may follow. In Jesus' name, amen.

CONFESSION

"The gifts of the Spirit in my life serve the body of Christ. Love governs what I carry, and edification is my aim."

PROPHETIC APPLICATION

God gives interpretation so that spiritual utterance can become understanding and edification. Seek the gift, submit to the order, and let every manifestation be measured by whether the body was built up.

DIGGING DEEPER

SPIRITUAL EXERCISE — Pray for deeper understanding of spiritual gifts while surrendering every desire to perform, impress, or be seen. Then read slowly in one sitting and write down every instruction Paul gives about order. REFLECTION QUESTIONS 1. Has fear or pride shaped your view of tongues more than Scripture has? 2. In a gathering, do you measure a moment by how it felt or by whether people were edified? 3. What would it look like for you to pray that you may interpret?
