“Could ye not watch with me one hour?”

Matthew 26:40 (KJV)

Jesus spoke these words to His disciples in Gethsemane. His call to watch and pray inspires our invitation to spend about an hour in Scripture, prayer, reflection, and response each day.

Why 4%? Four percent of 24 hours is about 58 minutes—rounded to one hour. This is an invitation, not a rule: Matthew 26:40 inspires it, but it isn't a command for a modern daily program.

Paul writes, 'while we look [skopeō] not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen.' Skopeō is where we get the word 'scope.' It is the aiming word — the deliberate narrowing of vision so that a specific reality governs the whole. Paul is not telling believers to deny what is seen; he is telling them what to aim at.

BIBLICAL EXAMPLE

Moses, according to , 'endured as seeing Him who is invisible.' His endurance was not stoicism; it was perception. He looked at the King no one else could see and lived accordingly. Kingdom perception produces Kingdom endurance.

EXPOSITION

Paul writes out of a life of visible pressure — beatings, shipwrecks, betrayals. Verse 16 opens with defiance: 'Therefore we do not lose heart.' The reason is perception, not personality. Verse 17 relativizes suffering by scale: 'our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory.' Notice — affliction is not denied; it is weighed against something greater. Verse 18 delivers the discipline: 'while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen.' The reason follows immediately: 'the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal.' This is the culmination of the week. Kingdom perception is not escapism. It is the mature capacity to live from eternal realities while walking through temporary ones. Jesus modeled it ( — 'for the joy set before Him'). Paul practiced it. The mature believer inhabits it.

REFLECTION

1. What temporary thing has been weighing more than an eternal thing in your soul? 2. Where are you reacting to the seen instead of living from the unseen? 3. How has this week's series retrained what you aim at? 4. What eternal reality do you need to fix your scope on this coming month? 5. What is one decision you will now make differently because Heaven is your frame?

PRAYER

Father, thank You for training my eyes this week. Fix my scope on what is eternal. Let me feel the weight of glory more than the weight of affliction. Make me a believer who lives from the unseen, not one who reacts to the seen. Transform my decisions, my responses, and my priorities by the perception You are forming in me. In Jesus' name, amen.
