Jesus spoke these words to His disciples in Gethsemane. His call to watch and pray inspires our invitation to spend about an hour in Scripture, prayer, reflection, and response each day.

Why 4%? Four percent of 24 hours is about 58 minutes—rounded to one hour. This is an invitation, not a rule: Matthew 26:40 inspires it, but it isn't a command for a modern daily program.

Paul writes from a prison cell, and the verb he reaches for is oida — not the word for information collected, but the word for knowledge that has settled. He does not say, "I know what I believe about God." He says, "I know whom I have believed." The object of his certainty is not a doctrine, a promise, or an outcome. It is a Person. Supporting Scripture: — "That I may know Him," where Paul uses ginōskō, knowledge gained through ongoing relationship and experience. Together the two words describe the journey of this phase: relational knowing (ginōskō) matures into settled knowing (oida).

To know by settled perception and inward certainty — not knowledge gathered by study alone, but knowledge that has become part of who a person is.

BIBLICAL EXAMPLE

Paul in chains () — He has lost his liberty, his reputation among men, and the support of many who once stood with him. He cannot explain the circumstance. But he can name the One he has walked with, and that knowledge holds when nothing else does.

EXPOSITION

There is a place in God called knowing, and no one arrives there overnight. We arrive through relationship, through revelation, through tested experience, and through the accumulated faithfulness of God across seasons we did not choose. Paul had information about God long before Damascus. He was trained in the finest theological system of his day. He could argue Scripture, defend orthodoxy, and quote the Law with precision. Yet the knowledge that sustained him in a Roman cell was not the knowledge he acquired in the school of Gamaliel. It was the knowledge he acquired by walking with Jesus through shipwreck, stoning, betrayal, hunger, imprisonment, and delay. Information can be received in an afternoon. Knowing is formed across a lifetime. Notice the precision of Paul's language. He does not claim to know why he is imprisoned. He does not claim to know when he will be released, whether the churches will hold, or how the trial will end. His certainty is not about outcomes. His certainty is about character: "I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that He is able to keep that which I have committed unto Him." Knowing does not mean you have answers. Knowing means the character of God has become more settled within you than the uncertainty surrounding you. This is the difference between believing that God is faithful and knowing His faithfulness. Belief is the proper starting point — Scripture never demeans it. But belief that is walked out over years begins to leave evidence in you. You remember the bill that was paid. You remember the door that closed and later proved to be mercy. You remember the night you were certain you would not survive and the morning that came anyway. Each of those becomes a stone of remembrance, and the accumulation of stones becomes a foundation you can stand on when the next storm arrives without explanation. Hear this carefully, because the Kingdom significance is easy to miss: God is not merely trying to get you through circumstances. He is using circumstances to move truth from your understanding into your foundation. What you have only heard can be argued away. What you have walked with God through cannot. This kind of knowing must be handled responsibly. It never becomes a platform for arrogance, because it was never earned — it was formed. It never makes a believer dismissive of others still in the believing stage, because everyone begins there. And it never replaces Scripture; it deepens our confidence in the God whom Scripture reveals. Test every claim of knowing by this: does it produce humility, endurance, and love, or does it produce superiority? Formation happens here. The believer who knows God's character stops negotiating with panic every time life becomes unclear. You will not always understand the circumstance. You are being formed to know the One who governs it.

REFLECTION

What truth about God has moved from something you believed intellectually into something you now know through experience?

PRAYER

Father, take my knowledge of You beyond information. I thank You for every Scripture I have learned, and I ask You now to make Your character settled within me. Where I have been holding facts about You, give me relationship with You. Where I am facing what I cannot explain, anchor me in what I cannot deny. Let my confidence rest not in outcomes but in Your unchanging nature. Form in me the kind of knowing that endures when circumstances offer no explanation. In Jesus' name, amen.

CONFESSION

"I know whom I have believed. His character is settled in me, and my confidence does not depend on my circumstances."

PROPHETIC APPLICATION

What begins as belief can become settled knowing through a life of walking with God. Look back over your journey and recognize that God has not only been answering you — He has been forming you. The seasons that made no sense were not wasted; they were where knowing was built. Do not despise the process that is producing certainty in you.

SPIRITUAL EXERCISE — Identify and write down three ways God has proven His character through your personal journey. Be specific: name the season, name the need, and name what God revealed about Himself. Keep the list; you are building a record of evidence. REFLECTION QUESTIONS 1. Where in your life are you still relating to God on information rather than relationship? 2. What has uncertainty tempted you to conclude about God that your history with Him contradicts? 3. What are you currently committing to Him that requires you to trust His keeping power?
