GLOBAL ALIGNMENT — WEEK TWO: ALIGN AS ONE BODY

4% • THE DAILY FORGE

One hour. Every morning. Room for God.

Beginning November 1 • 6–7 a.m. Eastern

Daily video gathering

You're invited. The first daily video will appear here when it is scheduled. Until then, today's study is ready for you.

“Could ye not watch with me one hour?”
Matthew 26:40 (KJV)

Jesus spoke these words to His disciples in Gethsemane. His call to watch and pray inspires our invitation to spend about an hour in Scripture, prayer, reflection, and response each day.

Why 4%? Four percent of 24 hours is about 58 minutes—rounded to one hour. This is an invitation, not a rule: Matthew 26:40 inspires it, but it isn't a command for a modern daily program.

STRONG'S G4886

That which binds together: a bond, ligament, band, or uniting principle. Used of love as the "bond of perfectness" (Colossians 3:14), of the "bands" that hold the body together (Colossians 2:19), and of the "bond of peace" (Ephesians 4:3).

BIBLICAL EXAMPLE

Joseph and his brothers (; 50:15–21). The brothers had sold Joseph into slavery. Years later, with power to punish them, Joseph wept, embraced them, and provided for their families. After Jacob died, he reassured them again: "ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good... Now therefore fear ye not: I will nourish you." Forgiveness held the family of Israel together.

EXPOSITION

“Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness. And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful” (, KJV). Paul has told the Colossians to "put off" the old man with its anger, malice, and lying (3:8–9) and to "put on" the new man (3:10). He then notes that in this new humanity "there is neither Greek nor Jew... Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free: but Christ is all, and in all" (3:11). Our passage describes the clothing of that new, diverse people. Notice their identity first: "the elect of God, holy and beloved." We do not put on these virtues to become loved. We put them on because we already are loved. The list is relational: compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, patience. Then two actions: forbearing and forgiving. Forbearing means bearing with one another's weaknesses. Forgiving means releasing real offenses — "if any man have a quarrel against any." Paul assumes there will be complaints. A body made of real people will experience friction. The standard is not what they deserve but what Christ did: "even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye." "Above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness." Love is the outer garment that holds everything together. The word "bond" can refer to ligaments that bind the body (the same word appears in as "bands"). Love is the connective tissue of the body. Without it, even gifted and disciplined members fall apart. "Let the peace of God rule in your hearts." The word "rule" was used for an umpire who decides a contest. When disagreements arise, Christ's peace is to be the deciding voice. "To the which also ye are called in one body." Peace is not only personal; it is corporate. Week Two ends here. Many members, mutual need, fitting joints, hidden honor, unity without uniformity, shared suffering — and love holding it all together. The body is not kept by structure alone. It is kept by love.

REFLECTION

Is there a quarrel I am holding that is weakening my connection to the body?

PRAYER

Father, thank You that I am chosen, holy, and beloved. Clothe me with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. Help me bear with others and forgive as Christ forgave me. Above all, let love bind me to Your body. Let Your peace rule in my heart and in our fellowship. In Jesus' name, amen.

CONFESSION

"Love is the bond of perfectness. I forgive as Christ forgave me, and His peace rules my heart."

PROPHETIC APPLICATION

Name one person you need to forbear or forgive. Choose to release the offense before God today. If reconciliation is wise and possible, take one step toward it this week.

DIGGING DEEPER

SPIRITUAL EXERCISE — Dressing for the body. 1. Write each virtue from on its own line. 2. Rate yourself honestly on each from 1 to 5. 3. For your lowest score, write one practical way to "put it on" this week. 4. Close by letting Christ's peace rule over one unresolved conflict.
