GLOBAL ALIGNMENT — WEEK TWO: ALIGN AS ONE BODY

4% • THE DAILY FORGE

One hour. Every morning. Room for God.

Beginning November 1 • 6–7 a.m. Eastern

Daily video gathering

You're invited. The first daily video will appear here when it is scheduled. Until then, today's study is ready for you.

“Could ye not watch with me one hour?”
Matthew 26:40 (KJV)

Jesus spoke these words to His disciples in Gethsemane. His call to watch and pray inspires our invitation to spend about an hour in Scripture, prayer, reflection, and response each day.

Why 4%? Four percent of 24 hours is about 58 minutes—rounded to one hour. This is an invitation, not a rule: Matthew 26:40 inspires it, but it isn't a command for a modern daily program.

KEY SCRIPTURE

Audio teaching for this study will be posted soon.

GREEK WORD OF THE DAY

συμπάσχω

sympaschō

STRONG'S G4841

To suffer together with, to share in suffering. From syn (with) and paschō (to suffer). Used in 1 Corinthians 12:26 and Romans 8:17, where believers suffer with Christ.

BIBLICAL EXAMPLE

Nehemiah hearing of Jerusalem (). Living in comfort in the Persian palace, Nehemiah heard that the remnant in Jerusalem was "in great affliction and reproach" and the wall was broken down. He sat down, wept, mourned, fasted, and prayed for days. Their suffering became his burden, and that burden became his assignment.

EXPOSITION

“That there should be no schism in the body; but that the members should have the same care one for another. And whether one member suffer, all the members suffer with it; or one member be honoured, all the members rejoice with it. Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular” (, KJV). Pain in one part of the body is felt by the whole. A small splinter in a finger can occupy a person's entire attention. Paul uses this universal experience to describe how the church is meant to function. "Whether one member suffer, all the members suffer with it." This is not a suggestion for particularly compassionate believers. It is a description of what happens in a healthy body. The members are so connected that the suffering of one becomes the concern of all. Notice the balance: "or one member be honoured, all the members rejoice with it." It can be hard to weep with those who weep, but it can be even harder to rejoice with those who rejoice, especially when envy is present. Paul says both are marks of genuine membership (see also ). The early church practiced this. When famine came, the believers in Antioch sent relief to the brethren in Judea (). Paul later gathered an offering from Gentile churches for poor believers in Jerusalem (; –9). Churches in different regions felt the suffering of others as their own. "Now ye are the body of Christ." This is identity, not aspiration. And "members in particular" — each one individually. The body is not an abstraction. It is people with names, needs, griefs, and victories. Global alignment means that the suffering of believers in other nations, cities, and cultures cannot be treated as someone else's problem. It also means celebrating what God does in places and ministries other than our own. A body that feels nothing when one member suffers is not healthy — it is numb. Ask God to restore your sensitivity. Pray for the persecuted church. Notice the hurting believer in your own congregation. Rejoice sincerely when another member is honored. This is what it looks like to be one body.

REFLECTION

Whose suffering in the body have I learned to ignore? Whose success do I find it hard to celebrate?

PRAYER

Lord Jesus, You are the Head who feels what Your body feels. Heal my numbness. Let me suffer with those who suffer and rejoice with those who rejoice. Remove envy from my heart. Make me a member who carries the burdens of others and celebrates their victories. In Your name, amen.

CONFESSION

"When one member suffers, I suffer with it; when one is honored, I rejoice."

PROPHETIC APPLICATION

Today, pray specifically for a persecuted or suffering part of the global church. Then contact one believer near you who is going through a hard season and offer practical help. Also congratulate someone sincerely for an honor they received.

DIGGING DEEPER

SPIRITUAL EXERCISE — Restoring sensitivity. 1. Read . 2. Research one region where believers face persecution and pray for them by name. 3. List three members of your local body who are suffering. 4. List three who have recently been honored. 5. Pray for and reach out to at least one from each list.
