With one accord; of one passion, one mind, one impulse. From homou, together, and thymos, passion. The word describes instruments tuned to the same pitch and played as one. Luke uses it repeatedly of the praying community before and after Pentecost — the room was not merely full, it was unified.

BIBLICAL EXAMPLE

The one hundred and twenty in the upper room (:4) — no program, no platform, no publicity. They obeyed a command to wait, resolved an unfinished matter of leadership, prayed with one accord, and stayed together across ten ordinary days. Then the Spirit fell and they preached with such order and clarity that three thousand were added and the church was structured the same day. Compare the ten virgins (): all had lamps, all slept, but only the prepared had oil when the moment arrived.

EXPOSITION

Before the fire fell, there was a room. "These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren" (). Ten days of obedience, prayer, unity, expectation, and waiting. Then, "when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place" and the Spirit came like wind and fire (). Jesus had commanded the waiting: "tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high" (). The disciples had already seen the resurrection. They already had the commission. They still had to be prepared. Understand this carefully: outpouring is God''s initiative. No amount of human effort produces Pentecost. Preparation does not earn what God pours out. But preparation profoundly affects how responsibly people receive, recognize, steward, and sustain what He releases. Paul gives the principle: "in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth... If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master''s use, and prepared unto every good work" (). God fills the vessel He finds ready. Preparation happens through consecration, repentance, unity, prayer, scriptural understanding, surrender, spiritual hunger, obedience, expectation, capacity, character, accountability, love, and practical readiness. Joel called it plainly: "turn ye even to me with all your heart, and with fasting, and with weeping, and with mourning: and rend your heart, and not your garments" (). Torn hearts, not torn clothing. Interior work, not performance. Now consider the cost of unprepared vessels. Power without character damages people — we have watched it happen and the wreckage takes years to clear. Gifts without love become destructive; Paul said that without love, even prophecy and mountain-moving faith amount to nothing. Manifestations without order create confusion in a house God did not author confusion in. And revival without formation may produce a memory rather than a reformation. That is why the upper room matters as much as the fire. One hundred and twenty people spent ten days in agreement, in prayer, in Scripture, and in obedience. When power came, it did not scatter them into chaos; it launched them into preaching, order, doctrine, generosity, and mission. They were ready to carry what they received. Ask yourself the honest question: if God poured out tomorrow everything you have asked Him for, could your character carry it, could your relationships survive it, could your accountability contain it, and would love govern it? Preparation is not delay. Preparation is enlargement.

REFLECTION

What must be formed, healed, surrendered, or strengthened in you before you can carry greater spiritual weight responsibly?

PRAYER

Father, prepare me. I do not ask for power I could not carry with integrity. Search my heart and show me what must be healed, surrendered, corrected, or strengthened. Give me a torn heart and not merely a religious appearance. Teach me to wait without frustration and to pray without performing. Bring me into genuine unity with Your people and place accountability around my life that I welcome rather than resist. Enlarge my capacity, purify my motives, and make me a vessel fit for the Master''s use. When You pour out, let me be ready to steward it. In Jesus' name, amen.

PROPHETIC APPLICATION

Build an upper room in your week. Choose a fixed time, invite two or three others into genuine agreement, and pray consistently for the outpouring you say you want. Bring the interior work with you: confess what is unresolved, repair what is broken, submit what is unaccountable. Do not chase the next atmosphere. Prepare the vessel. God has never struggled to find a crowd; He is looking for people ready to carry what He releases.

SPIRITUAL EXERCISE — Create a personal preparation inventory. Under each heading, write one honest assessment and one practical step: 1. Consecration 2. Character 3. Prayer 4. Scripture 5. Unity 6. Accountability 7. Capacity 8. Obedience 9. Love 10. Stewardship Then choose the weakest of the ten and give it deliberate attention for the next thirty days.
