— "Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant." The word translated "gifts" is supplied by translators; Paul literally writes peri de ton pneumatikon — "concerning the spiritual things." His concern is not a narrow list. It is an entire dimension of Kingdom operation the Church cannot afford to be uninstructed about. Agnoein, "ignorant," means uninformed, untaught, unaware — a condition Paul treats as correctable, not permanent.

Spiritual things, spiritual matters — the realm of what belongs to and originates from the Spirit. Paul does not say "gifts" here; he says "spiritual things," a whole territory of Kingdom function believers are not permitted to remain uninformed about.

BIBLICAL EXAMPLE

The Corinthian church — Paul writes to a congregation that was gifted and immature at the same time ( says they came behind in no gift). He does not strip them of what they carry. He teaches them, corrects them, and surrounds the gifts with love and order. Gifting was never the problem; formation was.

EXPOSITION

Paul opens this section of his letter with an apostolic refusal: he will not leave believers uninformed about spiritual things. Notice that ignorance here is not intellectual failure. It is unformed capacity. A believer can love God deeply, pray faithfully, read Scripture consistently, and still be entirely uninstructed about how the Holy Spirit works through people. Paul treats that gap as unacceptable in a maturing church. We must name honestly why so many believers stand at a distance from this subject. Some were taught suspicion — told that the manifestations of the Spirit ended, or that pursuing them invites deception. Others were not taught suspicion; they were wounded by misuse. They watched gifts used to manipulate, to control offerings, to dominate vulnerable people, to build a personality rather than build the Body. Some watched a person prophesy with confidence and be entirely wrong, with no accountability afterward. Others have simply seen so much theater that they concluded the whole territory was theater. Both responses — fear and disgust — are understandable. Neither is biblical. Paul does not respond to Corinthian disorder by removing the gifts; he responds by teaching them. The correction for misuse has never been disuse. It is formation. So let us define "more" carefully, because the word has been abused. More of the Holy Spirit does not mean more attention, more titles, more spectacle, more volume, or more spiritual reputation. It means greater capacity — capacity to serve, to strengthen, to heal, to discern, to build, to warn, to comfort, and to reveal Christ where He is not yet visible. Verse 7 governs everything that follows in the chapter: "the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal." Every manifestation is a phanerosis — a making visible. The invisible Kingdom becoming evident. And it is given pros to sumpheron, for the bearing-together, the common good. That phrase dismantles ownership. If the manifestation is for the common good, then it is not a trophy, not a possession, not evidence of spiritual rank, and not proof that one believer stands nearer to God than another. Understand the Kingdom significance. Jesus said the Kingdom of God is within you and among you — a reality more real than the visible world, yet unseen. The manifestations of the Spirit are moments where that unseen reality breaks the surface: a word spoken that no one could have known, a strategy given in crisis, a body healed, a spirit exposed, faith released where despair had settled. The Kingdom becomes evident, and Jesus is revealed. Hunger, then, is not carnal. It is commanded. "Covet earnestly the best gifts" (). "Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts" (). But notice what surrounds the command in both places: love. Chapter 13 sits deliberately between chapter 12 and chapter 14 — Paul builds a wall of love around the gifts so that hunger never becomes ambition. So this phase begins with an honest confrontation. Complacency is not humility. Deciding to want nothing is not the same as being safe. A believer who wants nothing supernatural will still meet people who are sick, oppressed, confused, deceived, grieving, and stuck — and will have nothing to offer them but sympathy. More is available. Not more for you. More through you.

REFLECTION

Have disappointment, misuse, fear, or shallow teaching caused you to stop desiring what the Holy Spirit makes available?

PRAYER

Father, I do not want to remain uninformed about the things of Your Spirit. Where fear has closed me, open me. Where wounding has hardened me, heal me. Where shallow teaching has misled me, correct me. Where fascination has pulled me toward spectacle, sober me. Give me holy hunger without recklessness, and availability without ambition. Let anything You place in my hands serve people and reveal Jesus. In His name, Amen.

PROPHETIC APPLICATION

Name the specific experience that shaped your posture toward spiritual gifts — a teaching, a wound, an embarrassment, a fraud you witnessed. Bring it to God honestly. Then ask Him for biblical understanding to replace both fear and fascination.

DIGGING DEEPER

SPIRITUAL EXERCISE — Read slowly, without hurry. Write down every manifestation named in the passage. Beside each one, write one honest sentence: what you believe about it, and where that belief came from. Then ask the Holy Spirit to replace fear, ignorance, and performance with biblical understanding and holy desire. REFLECTION QUESTIONS 1. Which manifestation on your list makes you most uncomfortable, and why? 2. Has your caution been biblical conviction, or an unexamined inheritance? 3. If the Holy Spirit wanted to meet a real need through you this week, would you recognize the moment?
