BIBLICAL EXAMPLE

Paul at Corinth () — Writing to a church rich in spiritual expression and poor in spiritual maturity, Paul insists that spiritual things are spiritually discerned and must be fitted to spiritual words, not to human eloquence.

EXPOSITION

Phase Two settled us in the knowledge of God Himself. Phase Three moves us to the harder question: when the Holy Spirit communicates, how do we recognize it, and how do we responsibly translate it? Paul says we have received the Spirit "that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God," and then that we speak those things in words the Holy Ghost teaches, fitting spiritual realities to spiritual language. Notice the two-stage process embedded in the text. There is reception, and there is articulation. They are not the same act, and they do not always happen at the same moment. Scripture records the Holy Spirit communicating in many ways: Scripture becoming suddenly illuminated, the inner witness, revealed understanding, dreams, visions, spiritual impressions, spiritual burdens, prophecy, tongues, and sudden spiritual awareness. Do not narrow God to the method most familiar to you. Some believers only expect an audible sentence and therefore dismiss a genuine burden. Others only expect feelings and therefore never open the Book where God speaks most clearly and most often. Let us be honest about a common overstatement: it is not true that Heaven never uses words. Scripture is full of speech — the Father speaking at the Jordan, the risen Christ speaking to Saul, the living creatures proclaiming holiness around the throne, angels delivering messages in plain sentences. What is true is that spiritual understanding is not restricted to sentences. Understanding may reach your spirit before your mind possesses complete vocabulary for it. That is why Paul speaks of fitting spiritual things to spiritual words: language is often assembled after the reality is received. Now hold the other side with equal firmness. Not every thought is the voice of God. Not every feeling is a burden from Heaven. Not every mental image is a vision. The same chapter that dignifies spiritual perception also anchors it: what the Spirit teaches is consistent with what the Spirit inspired. Scripture is the fixed standard; impressions are not. How does this operate? Awareness arises. You bring it to God rather than to an audience. You search the Scriptures for the language and the boundaries. You wait. You watch for confirmation. Only then do you speak, and you speak with language honest enough to reflect how much you actually know. The Kingdom significance is that God has given ordinary believers real access to His mind by His Spirit. That dignity carries responsibility. Formation happens here: do not dismiss what did not arrive as a sentence, and do not baptize every impulse as divine speech. Learn the patience of receiving before speaking.

Have you limited the Holy Spirit's communication to the methods most familiar to you?

PRAYER

Holy Spirit, thank You for making the things freely given to me by God knowable. Enlarge my capacity to recognize how You communicate, and keep me anchored in the Scriptures You inspired. Where I have dismissed You because You did not speak the way I expected, forgive me. Where I have called my own thoughts Your voice, correct me. Teach me the words that fit the realities You reveal, and give me the patience to wait for them. Increase my sensitivity without letting curiosity outrun my maturity. In Jesus' name, amen.

PROPHETIC APPLICATION

Spiritual communication may reach your spirit before your mind develops language for it. Stop demanding that God speak in one familiar format, and stop announcing every impression as though it were a finished message. Receive first. Let Scripture supply the language. Then speak.

SPIRITUAL EXERCISE — Ask God to increase your sensitivity without allowing curiosity to outrun maturity. This week, record any spiritual awareness exactly as it came, without forcing an immediate explanation. REFLECTION QUESTIONS 1. Which forms of spiritual communication have you unconsciously ruled out? 2. Where have you assumed a thought or feeling was from God without testing it? 3. What would change if you gave every impression a week of prayer before words?
