— "Prove (dokimazō) all things; hold fast that which is good." The word does not describe suspicion; it describes assaying. You test gold because gold is valuable. Supporting Scriptures: , try the spirits; , let the others judge (diakrinō, to discern and weigh). Scripture places testing and honoring the Spirit in the same breath: "Quench not the Spirit. Despise not prophesyings. Prove all things."

To test, examine, and prove — as metal is assayed for purity — with the expectation of approving what is genuine.

BIBLICAL EXAMPLE

The Bereans () — They received the word with all readiness of mind and searched the Scriptures daily to see whether those things were so. Scripture calls them noble for this, not rebellious. Openness and examination belonged together.

EXPOSITION

This phase ends where every honest exploration of spiritual knowing must end: at the testing table. "Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world." John writes this to a church that loved the Spirit, not to skeptics. The command to test assumes the reality of spiritual communication. You do not assay counterfeits you never expected to receive. Spiritual knowing must never become spiritual arrogance. The moment a believer places an impression beyond examination, that believer has left the safety of Scripture. Every impression, revelation, dream, prophecy, and interpretation must remain open to biblical testing — including the ones that felt overwhelming, the ones delivered by respected people, and the ones that flatter us. Paul gives the pattern in and refuses to let us choose between openness and order: do not quench the Spirit, do not despise prophesying, prove all things, hold fast the good, abstain from every form of evil. In he instructs that when prophets speak, the others weigh what is said. Testing is not the enemy of the prophetic; it is the protection of the prophetic. Ask these questions of anything you believe God has shown you: Does it agree with Scripture, rightly interpreted in context? Does it reflect the character of Christ — truthful, humble, loving, pure? Does it exalt Jesus, or does it exalt a person, a movement, or me? What spiritual fruit does it produce — peace and righteousness, or fear, division, and confusion? Does it edify, exhort, and comfort ()? Is it confirmed by Scripture, by godly counsel, or by the witness of trusted believers? Is the timing appropriate, or am I forcing it? Am I willing to receive correction if I have misread it? Am I adding anything God did not actually reveal? That last question deserves particular attention. Most inaccuracy is not fabrication; it is addition. A believer receives something genuine and then supplies detail, timing, or application that God never gave. Learn to say, "This much I sense; beyond that I do not know." Understand the Kingdom significance: responsible testing protects truth, protects people, and protects the integrity of spiritual gifts. Movements collapse when testing is treated as unbelief. Mature spiritual people are not offended when revelation is tested — they invite it, because they care more about truth than about being right. Formation happens here. As Phase Two closes, do not leave with more impressions. Leave with a tested heart, an open spirit, and a settled knowing of God Himself.

REFLECTION

Do you tend to accept spiritual impressions too quickly or dismiss them too quickly?

PRAYER

Father, form in me discernment that is both spiritually open and biblically responsible. Deliver me from the fear that closes my heart to Your Spirit and from the pride that refuses examination. Give me the humility to say I do not know, the courage to hold fast what is good, and the honesty to release what does not stand the test of Your Word. Let Jesus be exalted in everything I believe I have received from You. Make me safe, teachable, and faithful with the deep things You entrust to me. In Jesus' name, amen.

PROPHETIC APPLICATION

Mature spiritual people are not offended when revelation is tested. Bring what you carry into the light of Scripture and trusted counsel. What is truly from God will survive examination; what cannot survive examination was never worth carrying into the deep with you.

SPIRITUAL EXERCISE — Apply the biblical testing questions from this lesson to one spiritual impression you have recently received. Write the impression, then answer each question honestly, and record your conclusion: hold fast, wait, or release. REFLECTION QUESTIONS 1. What have you accepted as from God without ever testing it against Scripture? 2. What have you dismissed too quickly out of fear, cynicism, or past disappointment? 3. Who has permission to tell you that you may have missed it, and how do you respond when they do?
