To dig, to excavate. In Luke 6:48 the wise builder “digged deep” — eskapsen kai ebathynen, dug and went deep — the labor of removing what cannot bear weight until rock is reached.

BIBLICAL EXAMPLE

Jesus' own thirty hidden years (; 3:23) before three years of public ministry — depth proportionate to weight. Compare Joseph (–41), whose prison years dug the foundation that a palace would later require, and contrast the man in who “without a foundation built an house upon the earth,” whose ruin was great precisely because the structure had risen.

EXPOSITION

“He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock” (). Luke's version of this parable adds a detail Matthew does not: digging. Both builders wanted a house. Both built. The difference was the unseen labor of excavation. One removed the loose soil until he reached rock; the other built directly on the surface because it was faster. Digging is subtraction before addition. Before anything is laid, something must be removed — sand, sentiment, self-protection, unhealed offense, unexamined assumptions, hidden compromise. Excavation is the least celebrated work in construction and the most determinative. Notice the reason both houses looked identical until the flood came. Foundations are invisible in fair weather. The storm did not make one builder wise and the other foolish; it revealed what each had already chosen when no one was watching. Character is always built before it is displayed. Jesus defines the deep digging plainly in verse 47: “Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them.” Coming, hearing, doing. Not coming and hearing. Not admiring the teaching. Doing is the excavation. Every act of obedience removes another layer of sand. Understand also that depth must correspond to intended height. An engineer digs deeper for a tower than for a shed. If you are asking God for increase — influence, family, ministry, resources — you are asking for height. Height without depth is not blessing; it is exposure. So before September asks you to build capacity, it asks you to dig. What must be removed? What have you avoided confronting because it was easier to build over it? Depth is not delay. Depth is what makes the height survivable.

REFLECTION

What have I been building over instead of digging out?

PRAYER

Father, I ask for depth before I ask for height. Dig in me. Remove every layer that cannot bear the weight of what You want to build. I will not despise the hidden work or hurry past excavation. Bring me down to the rock, and then build as high as You please. In Jesus' name, amen.

PROPHETIC APPLICATION

Name the one thing you keep avoiding — a conversation, a confession, a habit, a wound, an unexamined motive. Begin excavation this week with a specific step: confession to God, honesty with a trusted believer, or the first obedient action you have delayed.

SPIRITUAL EXERCISE — The excavation list. 1. Write three things you have built over rather than dealt with. 2. Circle the one that would do the most damage under pressure. 3. Identify the first removal step and schedule it with a date. 4. Tell one accountable person. 5. Pray: “Lord, dig in me until You reach rock.”
