GLOBAL ALIGNMENT — WEEK TWO: ALIGN AS ONE BODY

4% • THE DAILY FORGE

One hour. Every morning. Room for God.

Beginning November 1 • 6–7 a.m. Eastern

Daily video gathering

You're invited. The first daily video will appear here when it is scheduled. Until then, today's study is ready for you.

“Could ye not watch with me one hour?”
Matthew 26:40 (KJV)

Jesus spoke these words to His disciples in Gethsemane. His call to watch and pray inspires our invitation to spend about an hour in Scripture, prayer, reflection, and response each day.

Why 4%? Four percent of 24 hours is about 58 minutes—rounded to one hour. This is an invitation, not a rule: Matthew 26:40 inspires it, but it isn't a command for a modern daily program.

KEY SCRIPTURE

Audio teaching for this study will be posted soon.

GREEK WORD OF THE DAY

σῶμα

sōma

STRONG'S G4983

Body. The physical body as an organized whole; used by Paul as a metaphor for the church united to Christ, with each believer as a "member" (melos, G3196) or limb.

BIBLICAL EXAMPLE

The rebuilding of Jerusalem's wall (). The chapter lists priests, goldsmiths, perfumers, rulers, daughters, and ordinary families, each repairing a section, often "over against his house." No single group could have built the whole wall. Many workers, one wall — finished in fifty-two days ().

EXPOSITION

“For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ. For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit. For the body is not one member, but many” (, KJV). Week One aligned us with the Head. Week Two turns to the body. Corinth was a gifted church and a divided church. Paul had to address factions around leaders (1:12), lawsuits among believers (6:1–8), division at the Lord's Supper between rich and poor (11:17–22), and pride over spiritual gifts (chapters 12–14). Some believers apparently prized certain gifts, especially tongues, as signs of higher spirituality. Paul answers with a picture everyone understood: the human body. "As the body is one, and hath many members... so also is Christ." Notice Paul does not say "so also is the church," though that is his meaning. He says "so also is Christ." The body is so united to its Head that Paul can speak of it by Christ's own name. Then he explains how we came into this body: "by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body." Every believer's membership comes from the same Spirit. No one earned it by class, ethnicity, or spiritual performance. Jews and Gentiles, slaves and free — the deepest social divisions of that world — were placed into one body and given one Spirit to drink. "The body is not one member, but many." Unity does not mean sameness. A body made of only one kind of part would not be a body. God designed diversity into the church deliberately. This speaks to both pride and insecurity. Some believers think the body revolves around their gift. Others think the body does not need them. Paul confronts both in the verses that follow (12:15–21). For today, settle the foundation: you are a member, not the whole body, and not an outsider. You were placed here by the Spirit. Global alignment begins in the local assembly. Before we can speak of nations joined together in Christ, we must learn to function as many members in one body in our own house.

REFLECTION

Do I tend to think of myself as the whole body, or as someone the body does not really need?

PRAYER

Holy Spirit, You placed me into one body with believers I did not choose. Thank You for my membership. Deliver me from pride that thinks I am the whole and from insecurity that thinks I am unnecessary. Help me to value the many members You have joined to Christ. In Jesus' name, amen.

CONFESSION

"By one Spirit I have been placed into one body. I am a member, and I belong."

PROPHETIC APPLICATION

Write down one specific way you currently function in the body of Christ. If you cannot name one, ask a leader or mature believer this week where they see you contributing, and commit to serve there.

DIGGING DEEPER

SPIRITUAL EXERCISE — Seeing the body. 1. Read in one sitting. 2. List the different members and functions Paul mentions. 3. Pray through your local church roster or contacts, thanking God for the different members by name. 4. Ask God where your part is meant to connect.
