GROWING · A LIFE BUILT ON JESUS

Faith in My Relationships

Read: Colossians 3:12–17

Paul begins this passage by reminding the Colossian believers who they are: “the elect of God, holy and beloved” (3:12). Before he asks anything of them, he tells them that they are chosen, set apart, and loved. Their behavior is meant to flow from this identity in Christ, not from a struggle to earn it.

Then Paul uses clothing language: “Put on therefore… bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering” (3:12). In today's words, that is compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Like clothes we put on each morning, these are chosen intentionally. Above them all, he says, put on love, “which is the bond of perfectness” (3:14)—the virtue that holds the others together.

Paul calls believers to bear with one another and forgive “even as Christ forgave you” (3:13). Christ's forgiveness is the model and motivation. Yet forgiveness is not the same as pretending harm did not happen, and it does not automatically restore trust or remove healthy boundaries. Forgiveness releases the desire for revenge; trust is rebuilt over time through changed behavior. Both can be handled with wisdom and, when needed, the help of trusted counselors or leaders.

Paul also says to let the peace of God rule in our hearts, to let the word of Christ dwell in us richly, and to do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus with thanksgiving (3:15–17). Relationships are shaped not only by effort but by what fills us.

Our faith is often tested most at home, at work, and among friends. Choosing one virtue to practice in one specific relationship can make faith concrete. Small acts—patient listening, a kind reply, an honest apology—are part of the life Paul describes.

Reflect

  1. Which virtue in verses 12–14 is most needed in my relationships right now?
  2. How does knowing I am “holy and beloved” affect how I treat others?
  3. Where do I need to forgive while also keeping wise boundaries?

Pray

Lord, thank You that I am chosen and loved. Clothe me with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Help me forgive as You forgave me, and give me wisdom in every relationship. Amen.

One practical step

Choose one virtue from Colossians 3:12–14 and practice it intentionally in one specific relationship today.

Suggested study rhythm

Read the passage, then the teaching. Choose the reflection question that presses most and write a short answer. Pray, then decide when today you will take the practical step. If you miss a day, simply pick up where you are.
