GROWING · A LIFE BUILT ON JESUS

Obedience When It Costs Something

Thursday, October 22

Read: Luke 9:23–26

Just before these verses, Peter confesses that Jesus is “The Christ of God” (9:20). Jesus then tells the disciples that He must suffer, be rejected, be killed, and be raised on the third day (9:22). Only after speaking about His own suffering does He describe what following Him involves.

“If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me” (9:23). In Jesus' day, the cross was not jewelry or a symbol of minor inconvenience; it was a brutal instrument of execution. To take up one's cross means to accept the cost of belonging to Jesus. Luke's word “daily” reminds us that this is a continuing allegiance worked out in ordinary days.

Jesus explains: whoever saves their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life for His sake will save it (9:24). He asks what it profits to gain the whole world and lose oneself (9:25). Self-denial means saying no to self-rule so that Christ, not our comfort or image, has first place.

It is important to understand what this does not mean. Self-denial is not erasing your God-given dignity, ignoring your needs, or submitting to abuse. Jesus' call is to allegiance to Him, not to anyone who demands control. Following Him often means refusing harm, telling the truth, and seeking safety and help.

Faithfulness can cost something: honesty that risks disapproval, generosity that limits spending, forgiveness that releases a grudge, integrity at work when cutting corners would be easier. Jesus does not ask us to pursue cost for its own sake, but to follow Him even when following is costly—trusting that true life is found in Him.

Reflect

  1. Where is following Jesus currently costing me something?
  2. How do I distinguish faithful self-denial from unhealthy self-erasure?
  3. What would choosing allegiance to Christ look like today?

Pray

Jesus, You walked the way of the cross for me. Give me courage to follow You when it costs something. Guard me from both easy comfort and false guilt, and let my life belong to You. Amen.

One practical step

Identify one costly, faithful choice in front of you this week, and decide when and how you will make it.

Suggested study rhythm

Read the passage, then the teaching. Choose the reflection question that presses most and write a short answer. Pray, then decide when today you will take the practical step. If you miss a day, simply pick up where you are.
