To put out from land; to launch a vessel away from the shore into open water. From epi, upon, and anagō, to lead up or set sail. It is a nautical command with no ambiguity: leave the place where the boat is tethered and take it where the bottom cannot be reached. Jesus used it as a word of commissioning.

BIBLICAL EXAMPLE

Simon Peter () — he launched out on a word rather than on evidence, and the same man who said "depart from me" at the boat stood up at Pentecost and preached three thousand people into the Kingdom. The deep water became the dimension he lived from for the rest of his life: he preached from it, healed from it, was imprisoned from it, wrote from it, and died faithful in it. Compare Isaiah (), who saw, was undone, was cleansed, and then volunteered before he was told what the assignment would cost.

EXPOSITION

This is the August commissioning. Simon had fished all night and caught nothing. He was washing his nets — the work that signals the end of a shift, the tangible admission that the labor produced nothing. Jesus preached from his boat, and then said, "Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught" (). Understand what was being asked. Jesus sent an exhausted, disappointed professional back to the exact place where his own effort had already failed. Peter answered honestly: "Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net." Nevertheless. That single word is the pivot of a life. It is the moment a man stops operating from his own expertise and begins operating from the word of Christ. The result broke nets and filled two ships until they began to sink. Peter fell down and said, "Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord." Jesus did not depart. He commissioned: "Fear not; from henceforth thou shalt catch men." And they forsook all and followed Him. Look back now at what this journey has formed in you. You have been taught to see the Kingdom and to know by the Spirit. You have learned to recognize spiritual communication, to separate revelation from interpretation, and to test what you perceive. You have studied tongues and interpretation, prophecy, the discerning of spirits, and how to practice without pretending. You have examined the manifestations of the Spirit and learned to distinguish gifts, callings, offices, and functions. You have looked honestly at prophetic responsibility and apostolic function. You have been asked to discern the times, to move into higher dimensions of faith, to hunger for awakening, to prepare for outpouring, and to leave the shallow water. This lesson is not the end of the journey. It is the crossing of a threshold. The deep is not a place believers visit for inspiration and then return to the shore. It becomes the dimension from which they live, pray, discern, serve, build, lead, minister, create, reform, and advance the Kingdom. And we must be clear about what "more" means. More is not merely more revelation. More is more responsibility. More love. More surrender. More maturity. More capacity. More service. More Kingdom fruit. Jesus said, "He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father" (). Paul said God "is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us" () — the power works in us before the abundance works through us. So the invitation comes exactly as it came to Isaiah, who heard, "Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?" and answered, "Here am I; send me" (). And it comes with the promise Jesus gave before Pentecost: "ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me... unto the uttermost part of the earth" (). The nets are in your hands. The word has been spoken. Launch out.

REFLECTION

What is your next step beyond the shallow water?

PRAYER

Father, at Your word I launch out. I have labored in my own strength and I know what it produces. Today I move from my expertise to Your instruction. Commission me. Give me courage where I have been hesitant, surrender where I have been controlling, and power that comes only from Your Spirit. Make me faithful with everything You have taught me this month. Let the deep become the place I live from and not a place I visit. Use my life for awakening, for building, for sending, and for the advancement of Your Kingdom in this generation. Here am I; send me. In Jesus' name, amen.

OUR AUGUST DECLARATION

We are leaving the shallow waters.

We will not remain spiritually uninformed, undeveloped, or afraid of what the Holy Spirit makes available.

We will search the Scriptures.

We will test what we perceive.

We will distinguish revelation from interpretation.

We will exercise spiritual gifts with humility.

We will grow in discernment.

We will pursue love.

We will honor divine order.

We will welcome correction.

We will reject spiritual performance.

We will understand the times.

We will prepare for awakening.

We will make ourselves available for outpouring.

We will function according to the grace God has given us.

We will build what Heaven has designed.

We will serve the purposes of God in our generation.

We are launching into the deep.

There is more available, and we intend to access it, steward it, and utilize it for the advancement of the Kingdom of God.

PROPHETIC APPLICATION

Do not close this month by admiring what you learned. Move your formation into function. Choose the assignment, the service, the building, or the gift development God has placed before you and begin it within seven days — not when you feel ready, not when conditions improve, but at His word. Peter''s catch did not come from better technique; it came from obedience in the deep. Whatever God said to you this month, do it.

DIGGING DEEPER

SPIRITUAL EXERCISE — Write a personal commissioning statement beginning with these words: "I am leaving the shallow water, and I am making myself available to God for..." Name the specific area of spiritual formation, gift development, calling, function, service, building, or Kingdom responsibility you will pursue. Be specific enough that someone could hold you to it. Then: 1. Name one person who will hold you accountable to it. 2. Name the first action and the date you will take it. 3. Name what you are surrendering in order to do it. 4. Sign and date it before God.
