HEBREW WORD · STRONG'S H8085

Shama is more than the reception of sound — it is hearing that produces movement. In Hebrew thought, to hear God without obeying is not to have heard Him at all. Abraham did not ask God to explain Moriah. He rose early, saddled his donkey, and moved. Obedience was his first response, not his last resort.

HEBREW WORD OF THE DAY

שָׁמַע

shama

STRONG'S H8085

to hear intelligently, to hear with the intent to obey

BIBLICAL EXAMPLE

Consider Abraham's servants who traveled with him for three days but were told to "abide ye here with the ass" (). Proximity to obedience is not the same as participation in it. Many walk near an obedient person but never make the ascent themselves. God is separating the servants from the sons this week.

EXPOSITION

When God said "Take now thy son," He did not first release the ram. The provision was already on the mountain, but it would only be revealed on the other side of obedience. Abraham was not being tested on Moriah — he was being formed on the three-day journey. God does not always begin with an explanation because explanation is not what forms us. Obedience is. Understanding is often the reward of obedience, not the requirement for it. The Kingdom moves on hearing hearts, not informed heads. What God is asking you to do today does not have to make sense to your intellect — it must simply find agreement in your spirit.

REFLECTION

Where in your life are you waiting for understanding before you obey? What has God already spoken that you have delayed because it did not yet make sense? Who around you is walking three days with you but unwilling to climb the mountain?

PRAYER

Father, forgive me for the places I have negotiated with Your voice, waiting for clarity You never promised. Teach my heart the discipline of shama — to hear and to move. Cut off the delay between Your word and my obedience. Form me on the journey, and let understanding meet me on the other side of my yes. In Jesus' name, amen.

CONFESSION

"I am a hearer who obeys. I do not require the whole map to take the first step. My obedience unlocks the provision that is already waiting on the mountain."

PROPHETIC APPLICATION

Identify one instruction the Holy Spirit has spoken to you in the last thirty days that you have not yet obeyed because you were waiting for it to make sense. Today, take the first visible step toward that instruction — a call, a text, a decision, a release. Do not wait for the whole picture. Move on what you have heard.

FURTHER STUDY

Read in full. Notice every place the text says Abraham simply "rose," "went," "took," "laid," "stretched forth." Underline the verbs of obedience. Notice that God only speaks again after Abraham has fully obeyed. The voice that stops the knife only comes after the hand has been lifted.
