“Could ye not watch with me one hour?”

Jesus spoke these words to His disciples in Gethsemane. His call to watch and pray inspires our invitation to spend about an hour in Scripture, prayer, reflection, and response each day.

Why 4%? Four percent of 24 hours is about 58 minutes—rounded to one hour. This is an invitation, not a rule: Matthew 26:40 inspires it, but it isn't a command for a modern daily program.

To set right in addition, to further correct or straighten what remains. Paul left Titus in Crete to epidiorthoō the things that were lacking — ongoing structural correction as an apostolic assignment.

BIBLICAL EXAMPLE

Titus in Crete (–3) and Paul appointing elders in every church “with prayer and fasting” after preaching the gospel in Derbe, Lystra, Iconium, and Antioch (). Notice that Paul returned to confirm the souls of the disciples and organize leadership rather than moving on from the excitement of new converts. Contrast Ephesus in , orderly and doctrinally vigilant yet warned for leaving its first love — order without presence is also failure.

EXPOSITION

“For this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting, and ordain elders in every city, as I had appointed thee” (). Paul planted churches under the power of the Holy Ghost, with miracles, conversions, and demonstrations of the Spirit. And then he sent men behind him to establish order. The presence came first; the order followed; and Paul saw no contradiction between them. This corrects two errors at once. The first error says structure kills the Spirit, so we should avoid definition, accountability, and appointed leadership. Crete answers that: what was wanting was structure, and its absence was harming the church. The second error says structure produces the Spirit, so if we organize well enough, presence is guaranteed. Ephesus answers that: an orderly church that had left its first love was warned that the lampstand could be removed (). Notice what Paul specifies. Elders in every city, qualified by character (). Sound doctrine able to “exhort and to convince the gainsayers.” Correction of those subverting households for gain. Instruction for older men, older women, younger women, younger men, and servants — a whole architecture of formation across the community. Then chapter 3 grounds it all in the mercy of God, “the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost.” Order and grace in the same letter. Notice also the phrase “things that are wanting.” Every work has them. Maturity is not the absence of gaps; it is the willingness to keep straightening what remains. Builders who cannot bear to hear what is lacking will never establish anything durable. And notice the pastoral heart in it. Order in Titus exists to protect households from exploitation, to give young believers models, to ensure sound teaching, and to make the doctrine of God attractive — “that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things” (). So preserve presence and establish order. Keep the fire and build the fireplace. One without the other cannot last.

REFLECTION

Where am I keeping fire without a fireplace, or a fireplace with no fire?

PRAYER

Father, give me both fire and order. Let me never use structure to replace You or use spontaneity as an excuse for neglect. Show me what is wanting and give me courage to set it right. Guard my first love while I build. Let the house be orderly and the presence be undeniable. In Jesus' name, amen.

PROPHETIC APPLICATION

Identify one thing that is “wanting” in what you lead and set it right this week. At the same time, guard the presence: protect your prayer life, your worship, and your first love while you build the structure.

DIGGING DEEPER

SPIRITUAL EXERCISE — Set in order what is lacking. 1. List what is wanting in your household or ministry: leadership, teaching, care, clarity, accountability. 2. Choose one and define what setting it right would look like. 3. Take the first step this week. 4. In the same week, add one deliberate act of pursuing His presence. 5. Never do one without the other for the rest of this year.
