“Could ye not watch with me one hour?”

Matthew 26:40 (KJV)

Jesus spoke these words to His disciples in Gethsemane. His call to watch and pray inspires our invitation to spend about an hour in Scripture, prayer, reflection, and response each day.

Why 4%? Four percent of 24 hours is about 58 minutes—rounded to one hour. This is an invitation, not a rule: Matthew 26:40 inspires it, but it isn't a command for a modern daily program.

A household steward — one entrusted with the management of what belongs to another. From oikos (house) and nemō (to manage). A steward has authority over the estate but never ownership of it.

BIBLICAL EXAMPLE

Paul at Ephesus and Thessalonica. “I have coveted no man's silver, or gold, or apparel... these hands have ministered unto my necessities” (); “we were gentle among you, even as a nurse cherisheth her children... labouring night and day, because we would not be chargeable unto any of you” (). Contrast , where shepherds fed themselves and not the flock, ruling “with force and with cruelty,” and Diotrephes, who loved preeminence (–10).

EXPOSITION

“Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind; neither as being lords over God's heritage, but being ensamples to the flock” (). Peter names three corruptions and their three corrections. Reluctance is corrected by willingness. Greed is corrected by readiness of mind. Domination is corrected by example. Every abuse in spiritual leadership fits somewhere in that list. The deciding word is heritage — klēros, God's portion, God's allotment. The people are not the leader's asset. When a builder forgets whose people they are, the language of stewardship quietly becomes the practice of ownership, and ownership always produces extraction. Consider how exploitation actually happens. It rarely begins with malice. It begins with need — the need for volunteers, for finances, for growth, for validation. Then people become resources rather than souls. Spiritual language becomes leverage: obedience, covering, loyalty, honor. The words are biblical; the usage is manipulative. Peter's antidote is exemplary leadership: “being ensamples to the flock.” Authority in Kingdom construction is demonstrated before it is required. Jesus said the rulers of the Gentiles exercise dominion, “but so shall it not be among you: but whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister” (). Gifts must be stewarded, not merchandised. Peter warns elsewhere of false teachers who “through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you” (). The test is simple: does this arrangement develop the person, or does it consume them? Are people leaving stronger, freer, more mature, and more able to hear God for themselves — or more dependent, more fearful, and more useful to me? And notice the reward Peter offers: “when the chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of glory that fadeth not away” (v. 4). There is a chief Shepherd. Every under-shepherd will give account for how the flock was handled. Build structures that serve souls. Never build souls into structures.

Are the people around me being developed or being used?

PRAYER

Father, these are Your people, not mine. Purge every trace of ownership, manipulation, and greed from my leadership. Let me lead by example and not by pressure. Make me the kind of builder who leaves people stronger, freer, and closer to You. I will answer to the Chief Shepherd, and I want to answer well. In Jesus' name, amen.

PROPHETIC APPLICATION

Ask someone you lead a costly question: “Have I ever used you?” Receive the answer without defense. Then adjust one practice — how you ask for help, how you speak about commitment, how you handle finances, how you respond when someone says no.

DIGGING DEEPER

SPIRITUAL EXERCISE — The stewardship review. 1. List the people who serve alongside you. 2. Beside each name write what they have received in the last six months: teaching, care, development, rest. 3. Note anyone who has only given. 4. Take one concrete action to pour into that person this week. 5. Repent for any place spiritual language has been used as leverage.
