“Could ye not watch with me one hour?”

Matthew 26:40 (KJV)

Jesus spoke these words to His disciples in Gethsemane. His call to watch and pray inspires our invitation to spend about an hour in Scripture, prayer, reflection, and response each day.

Why 4%? Four percent of 24 hours is about 58 minutes—rounded to one hour. This is an invitation, not a rule: Matthew 26:40 inspires it, but it isn't a command for a modern daily program.

Oikodomē (G3619) speaks of a building in progress — a structure being raised piece by piece according to the builder's design. In Paul turns the word onto the people of God themselves: "ye are God's husbandry, ye are God's building" (oikodomē). The Greek construction carries two inseparable truths. First, ownership: the building belongs to God, not to the laborers. Second, agency: construction is already underway because the Builder is faithful, not because the workers are impressive. Paul calls himself and Apollos synergoi — fellow workers — meaning the real Builder is God and every servant is a subordinate craftsman working His blueprint. When the Church grasps oikodomē, competition dies: no one competes for a building that is not theirs. Ministry becomes stewardship, growth becomes God's responsibility, and our only charge is to build carefully on the foundation already laid — Jesus Christ.

A building, a structure under construction; also the act of building up, edification. Paul uses it of the people themselves — you are God's oikodomē, His construction project and His property.

BIBLICAL EXAMPLE

Paul and Apollos at Corinth (; ). Apollos was eloquent and mighty in the Scriptures, yet Aquila and Priscilla took him aside and “expounded unto him the way of God more perfectly.” Neither gathered a following. Paul planted, Apollos watered, God gave increase. When the Corinthians tried to make celebrities of them, both refused the pedestal. Contrast Diotrephes (–10), “who loveth to have the preeminence,” who used the house of God to guard his own position.

EXPOSITION

“For we are labourers together with God: ye are God's husbandry, ye are God's building” (). Paul writes this to a church fracturing over personalities — I am of Paul, I am of Apollos. His correction is not merely pastoral; it is architectural. The ministers are laborers. The people are the building. And the building belongs to God. That single truth dismantles most of what corrupts ministry. If the building belongs to God, then no laborer owns it, no laborer may exploit it, and no laborer may build it to bear his own name. Paul reduces himself and Apollos to function: “Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but ministers by whom ye believed?” (). One planted, one watered, God gave the increase. Understand what Paul is naming as the actual construction site. He does not say the assembly hall is God's building. He says you are. The material of Kingdom construction is people. Not budgets, not platforms, not branding — people being formed into a dwelling. That means every decision about how we build must be evaluated by what it does to people. This is why the passage moves immediately into the seriousness of materials and inspection: “Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble; every man's work shall be made manifest... and the fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is” (). Some construction survives fire; some does not. The fire does not test sincerity. It tests substance. Then comes the sharpest word: “If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are” (). To damage people in the process of building something for God is not a management error; it is a violation of holy property. Manipulation, exploitation, spiritual pressure, and the consuming of people for the sake of results are treated by Paul as desecration. Kingdom construction, then, has a builder's ethic: God owns it, people are the material, fire will test it, and the highest crime is harming the very ones you were sent to build. Labor with God, not for your own name.

REFLECTION

Whose name is my building actually serving — His or mine?

PRAYER

Father, this is Your building and I am only a laborer in it. Cleanse me of ownership. Keep me from using Your people to build my name. Give me materials that survive fire — truth, prayer, integrity, patience, love. Let everything I touch be handed back to You intact and stronger than I found it. In Jesus' name, amen.

PROPHETIC APPLICATION

Examine one thing you lead or influence and ask what it is doing to people. Are people being formed, healed, taught, and released — or used, pressured, and depleted? Make one concrete adjustment this week that costs you visibility but protects a person.

DIGGING DEEPER

SPIRITUAL EXERCISE — The materials inventory. 1. List the three main things you are pouring effort into. 2. Beside each, write what material you are using: prayer, Scripture, discipleship, integrity (gold, silver, precious stones) — or hype, urgency, image, comparison (wood, hay, stubble). 3. Ask: “If fire came tomorrow, what remains?” 4. Repent where necessary and replace one material this week.
