ROOTED · A LIFE BUILT ON JESUS
Why Do We Need a Savior?
Tuesday, October 20
Read: Romans 3:21–26 (with Romans 3:23)
In the first chapters of Romans, Paul carefully shows that every group of people—religious and non-religious alike—stands in need before God. Then in 3:21 he turns with the words “But now.” Something has changed. A righteousness from God has been made known, not through keeping the law perfectly, but through faith in Jesus Christ, for all who believe.
Verse 23 explains why everyone needs it: “all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.” Sin is more than breaking a rule. It is missing the mark of the life God intended—turning from Him, trusting ourselves, and harming others and ourselves along the way. Paul does not single out a few especially bad people. He levels the ground. No one stands above anyone else.
Paul then uses the word justified (3:24). To be justified means to be declared in the right before God. Paul says this happens “freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.” Grace is God's undeserved kindness. Redemption is the language of being bought back or set free. Verse 25 says God presented Christ as the one whose sacrifice deals with sin, showing that God is both just and the one who justifies those who trust in Jesus (3:26).
This good news does not mean sin is unimportant. The cross shows how seriously God takes the harm sin causes. But grace does not ask us to hide, perform, or prove ourselves. It invites us to come honestly. Grace is not permission to keep hurting others; it is the doorway into a restored relationship with God, where real change begins.
Many people live with a quiet scoreboard—trying to be good enough for parents, employers, churches, or God. Romans 3 lets you set the scoreboard down. You are not accepted because you outperform others. You are received because of what Christ has done. That truth humbles us and frees us at the same time.
Reflect
- Where have I tried to earn acceptance?
- How does verse 23 change the way I see myself and others?
- What does it mean to me that right standing with God is a gift?
Pray
God, I have fallen short, and I cannot fix that on my own. Thank You for the gift of right standing through Jesus. Help me stop performing for Your acceptance and receive Your grace honestly. Amen.
One practical step
Take a few quiet minutes to pray honestly—name your need for God plainly, and receive the grace offered through Christ with thanks.
Suggested study rhythm
Read the passage slowly once, then again, noticing what it shows about God. Sit with one reflection question, pray the response prayer in your own words, and take the practical step when it fits your day. Fifteen minutes or a full hour are both welcome—come back tomorrow.
