Growing pathway

GROWING · A LIFE BUILT ON JESUS

What Is My Life Actually Built On?

Monday, October 19

Read: Matthew 7:24–27

These verses close the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus' extended teaching in Matthew 5–7. He has spoken about blessing, anger, prayer, money, worry, and judging others. Now He tells a short story to show what His listeners should do with everything they have heard.

Two builders each construct a house. One builds on rock; the other on sand. Then “the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew” on both houses (7:25, 27). The house on the rock stands; the house on the sand falls, “and great was the fall of it.” Jesus identifies the wise builder as the one who “heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them” (7:24). The foolish builder also hears, but does not act.

This is sobering because both builders heard Jesus. Listening to sermons, reading devotionals, and agreeing with what is said can feel like growth. Jesus says the decisive difference is practice. Belief becomes foundation when it shapes daily decisions—how we speak, spend, forgive, and treat people when no one is watching.

It is also honest. The storm hits both houses. Following Jesus does not promise immunity from trouble, illness, loss, or disappointment. What it offers is a foundation that will not give way. Hardship tests what we have been building on; it is not automatically a sign that we built poorly.

Most of us have areas where we have heard Jesus clearly but quietly postponed obedience—perhaps His words about worry (6:25–34), about reconciliation (5:23–24), or about judging others (7:1–5). Growth often begins not with learning something new but by practicing something we already know. Choose one, and build there today.

Reflect

  1. Which teaching of Jesus have I heard often but rarely practiced?
  2. How have past storms revealed what I was relying on?
  3. What would “doing” His words look like in my schedule this week?

Pray

Jesus, I have heard much of what You say. Give me the courage to practice it. Make my life a house built on Your words, so I stand when storms come. Amen.

One practical step

Choose one instruction from Matthew 5–7 that you have neglected and practice it today in a specific, concrete way.

Suggested study rhythm

Read the passage, then the teaching. Choose the reflection question that presses most and write a short answer. Pray, then decide when today you will take the practical step. If you miss a day, simply pick up where you are.
