EQUIPPED · A LIFE BUILT ON JESUS

Equip People to Participate

Read: Ephesians 4:11–16

Paul writes that the risen Christ gave gifts to His church: “some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers” (4:11). Christians understand how these roles continue today in different ways, but the purpose Paul gives is clear in the next verse.

These leaders are given “For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ” (4:12). Perfecting here means equipping or preparing. Saints refers to all believers. In other words, leaders are meant to prepare God's people to do the work of ministry—not to do all the ministry themselves.

The goal is maturity and unity: that we all come “in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ” (4:13). Mature believers are no longer “tossed to and fro” by every new teaching (4:14). Instead, “speaking the truth in love,” they grow up into Christ, the head (4:15).

Verse 16 describes the whole body joined and held together, growing as every part does its work. Every believer contributes. A church or ministry that depends on one gifted personality—where people watch rather than participate—falls short of this picture. Celebrity dependency can feel exciting, but it leaves people immature and fragile.

Equipping is often slower than doing things yourself. It means teaching, demonstrating, letting someone try, offering feedback, and trusting them to grow. But it multiplies faithfulness. Whatever your role, you can help someone take a next step—with support, not abandonment.

Reflect

  1. Am I doing ministry for people more than equipping them to participate?
  2. Who around me has gifts that need encouragement and practice?
  3. How does Christ as the head shape the way I lead?

Pray

Lord Jesus, You are the head of the body. Make me someone who equips others, not someone who needs to be needed. Help every part grow in love. Amen.

One practical step

Help someone practice a skill—such as leading a prayer, reading Scripture aloud, or facilitating a discussion—with your support and encouragement.

Suggested study rhythm

Read the passage in its surrounding paragraph first. Work through the teaching and reflection questions, ideally with a notebook. Pray for the people you serve, and plan the practical step this week. Unhurried attention matters more than finishing quickly.
